UPDATE: 40 years parole eligibility in woman's homicide

UPDATED Tuesday, November 19, 2013 --- 1:24 p.m.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) -- A 22-year-old Marshfield man convicted of killing the mother of his child has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 40 years.

Gabriel Campos was arrested at a Wisconsin Rapids motel with his 2-year-old son in September 2012, a day after his ex-girlfriend was found with her throat cut in the bathtub of a home the couple once shared.

Marshfield police testified during a preliminary hearing that blood DNA that Campos had on his legs and in his car and a blood-covered knife in his vehicle matched the victim, 18-year-old Maisie McCullough. Authorities say McCullough had recently ended her relationship with Campos before she was killed.

WSAW-TV says Campos earlier pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) -- A 22-year-old Wood County inmate will stand trial for allegedly trying to arrange a murder while he was jailed on a homicide charge.

Gabriel Campos, Marshfield, has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in stabbing death of his former girlfriend 18-year-old Maisie McCullough on Sept. 7. She's mother of his 2-year-old son.

On Tuesday, he pleaded not guilty to attempted solicitation of first-degree intentional homicide after authorities said he tried to hire another inmate to kill someone McCullough was dating.

The Daily Tribune reports a Wood County judge found enough evidence Tuesday for the case to move forward.

Marshfield Police Officer Jim Cramm testified the inmate indicated that Campos offered to give him $4,600 in cash, a car and a gun for the homicide.
