Madison Police say an out-of-control van nearly hit a downtown resident late Saturday night.
The van missed the woman by several feet before slamming into a utility pole in the 100 block of W. Gorham St.
The woman says the crash caused sparks to fly from the pole, some of which hit her. She was not injured.
She saw the driver and several passengers run away from the van.
Police were able to find the driver several hours later. He reportedly told officers he was "way too messed up from drinking" and that is why he took off.
Full and empty beer cans were found inside the smashed van.
19-year-old Saul E. Ramirez was cited for Hit & Run, Violate Absolute Sobriety Law, and Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance.
