Owner of ramshackle house takes fight to court

TOWN OF NEENAH, Wis. (AP) -- The owner of a ramshackle house in the Town of Neenah has petitioned the state Supreme Court to rule on his fight against razing the building.

A legal fight over the house, valued at $1,000, has been going on for three years. The town says it has cost it $30,000 in legal fees.

An appellate court ruled earlier this year that the town properly ordered owner Stephen Bates to demolish the house. Neighbors say it's an eyesore and overrun with vermin. If he failed to raze it, the town would do it and bill him.

Town Chairman Bob Schmeichel says if, by chance, the high court would take the case and rule in Bates favor, the community may have to replace the house. Schmeichel tells Post-Crescent Media he doesn't want to put the town in that position.
