Pedestrian Hit By Car In Madison

Posted: Saturday, January 12, 2013 -- 7:23 a.m.

One person was hospitalized Friday night after getting hit by a car in Madison.

Madison police said the pedestrian did not have the right of way Friday night at around 7:30 p.m. when he walked into oncoming traffic at the intersection of Verona Road and Atticus Way.

The pedestrian suffered a broken leg, was hospitalized and later cited for "sudden pedestrian movement."

Police say the driver is not being charged.

Kristi, I'm sure if the driver COULD HAVE stopped, the driver would have. So much more preferable than waxing a pedestrian no matter whose fault it is. Get a grip, the world doesn't stop because someone wants to cross the street whereever they choose, which is why traffic engineers place crosswalks in strategic locations with appropriate signage. Personal responsibility seems to be lacking in society these days.

I was stopped at a crosswalk, with my infant in her stoller. No traffic from the left, traffic from the right had stopped so I could cross, and the jackwagon behind the stopped car passed on the right to get around and zoom off. People are in such a hurry and so inconsiderate. At a lighted intersection I totally get that you wait, but at an uncontrolled intersection, when someone has stopped to let you go, WAIT!!

I hate to say it but I think all of the police enforcement of vehicles being required to stop so anyone waiting to cross the stree is going to make things like this happen more often. And teaching children that they can walk out into oncoming traffic because the traffic is supposed to stop is INSANE!! When I was little one of the very first thing we were taught was to watch out for traffic, look both ways and do not cross until there were no carsa coming!!!

Well, Larry, it is law that pedestrians have the right of way in marked crosswalks. But just like any other 'at fault' accident, they don't have the right to put others in harms way by crossing whereever they please.

I love how MPD cite people for that. My sister got cited for that and it got thrown out cause the judge never heard of that law and said it was BS
