UPDATE: Colleagues remember UW-Madison librarian killed by truck

UPDATED: Saturday, January 18, 2014 --- 5:30 p.m.

Colleagues and close friends fondly called her "Edie". Professionally, Edith Dixon was perhaps the most knowledgeable person in the UW system when it came to library data. And for those who got to know the 62-year-old personally, they describe her as kind, quiet, and a little quirky.

"The more you knew her, you appreciated her sense of humor. She'd come into the office with the head phones on occasionally and she'll be singing at the top of her lungs which is kind of odd in comparison to her generally quiet demeanor," said Mitch Lundquist, who worked with Dixon for 25 years at the Memorial Library.

Lundquist says Dixon always took a quick break outside each morning. But Thursday, she never returned to work.

According to police, Dixon was walking behind a Union delivery truck on Lake Street when it backed into her.

"It's been hard to focus on work, it's been hard to put it out of my mind," Lundquist said.

Dixon was a senior academic librarian. She helped implement a number of big UW-wide library technology systems. "And she's the person the UW relies on for expertise in this area," Lundquist said. "It's a huge loss to the University and the UW system."

The University is providing grief counselors for those who need them.
Colleagues are also working with Dixon's family to put together a service in her memory next week.
