Port of Milwaukee Preps To Avoid Damage

Posted Monday, October 29, 2012 --- 2:45 p.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- With waves expected to reach as high as 33 feet Tuesday on Lake Michigan, the Port of Milwaukee is taking steps to protect its docks and boats.

The superstorm bearing down on the eastern seaboard was expected to create dangerous conditions on the Great Lakes. The National Weather Service issued warnings for the lakes through Wednesday. Wisconsin emergency authorities said waves could reach 15 feet along the state's coast.

The Journal Sentinel (http://tinyurl.com/95wr4p7 ) says the freighter Isa carrying steel to Milwaukee will dock inside a breakwater rather than at the port to avoid damage. The ferry that sails between Milwaukee and Muskegon, Mich., was canceled Monday.

Gov. Scott Walker says the Wisconsin National Guard stands ready to deploy to other states if needed.
