UPDATED Tuesday, July 17, 2012 --- 6:30 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Two Madison brothers are hospitalized in critical condition as investigators search for answers to why their house exploded.

The blast knocked their home off the foundation Monday and blew the front door and its frame into the front yard. Brian and Dillon Hansen, both in their 20s, were taken to UW Hospital after the explosion.

Their parents were also in the house, but not seriously injured.

The State Journal (http://bit.ly/LmSGon ) says the explosion also caused small fires in the basement and structural cracks in the ceiling and interior walls of the house.

REPORTER: Chris Woodard

Two brothers are at the hospital in critical condition tonight after a home explosion in Madison.

The home is at 413 S. Midvale Boulevard. Caution tape is still up as investigators move in and out of the home, trying to figure out exactly what it was that caused this explosion. It's a question neighbors desperately want answered.

Many neighbors woke up to find firefighters on scene and Midvale Boulevard shut down.

Neighbor Kathy Knox said, "Well of course you kind of panic living in the neighborhood and what not."

Just before 5 o'clock this morning the explosion knocked the house off it's foundation and blew off the front door

Knox said, "My husband thought something had fallen from the wall so he went to check it out."

Half burnt couch cushions still sit on the lawn. The explosion caused a fire inside.

Fire Department Public Information Officer Lori Wirth says, "Four people were in the house."

A couple and their two adult sons managed to make it out of the home.

Those sons, Dylan and Brian Hansen, are both in their 20's and were immediately rushed to the hospital.

They are in critical condition tonight.

Wirth said, "We are looking now at trying to piece together what happened."

Throughout the day as investigators looked for a cause emotional friends came to the scene looking for information and someone stopped to gather belongings for the family.

All the while neighbors wonder why.

Neighbor Jim Granger said, "Well when I heard gas you get scared, so that's the first emotion is fear."

While a cause has not been determined fire investigators are looking into the possibility of a gas leak somewhere in the home.

Wirth said, "The investigation is going to be ongoing and will probably be lengthy."

Personnel from Madison Gas and Electric were on scene looking for gas leaks in the neighborhood and did not find any.

Investigators say they will continue to comb through the home to try to figure out a cause.

According to a UW Hospital spokesperson those two brothers are still hospitalized and are in critical but stable condition tonight.

UPDATED Monday, July 16, 2012 --- 10:50 a.m.

From the Madison Fire Department: Two Injured in Early Morning House Explosion

Two Madison men in their 20’s were transported to UW Hospital this morning following a house explosion at 413 S. Midvale.

City of Madison firefighters were dispatched to the address at 4:45 a.m. today after the homeowner called 911 to report the explosion.

When firefighters and paramedics arrived minutes later, they found all occupants out of the house. Paramedics immediately transported the two men to UW Hospital. Their parents were transported by MPD later to join their sons at the hospital.

When Engine Company 9 arrived, they noted light smoke from a chimney at the center of the house. The house had been lifted off of its foundation.

There was active fire in the basement. Engine 4 controlled the gas by shutting it down at the house. Crews from Engine 9 entered cautiously, noting the instability of the building. They worked their way to the basement to extinguish the fires. There were two areas of the basement that were extinguished. Only contents were burning.

Squad 8 was dispatched and shored up the front door. The entire front wall was pushed out about 6 inches. Once the shoring was complete, E9 returned to the area of origin to hit spot fires and overhaul some of the furniture that was still smoldering.

Personnel from Madison Gas & Electric were on scene to test for any possible leaks in the neighborhood. They found none. There was no service disruption to any other home. Both gas and electrical power were shut off to the home where the explosion occurred.

The house has sustained significant structural damage, but no damage estimate has been calculated. The cause of the blast remains under investigation.
