VIDEO REPORT: Presidential Visit Causing Some Closures

Posted Wednesday October 3, 2012 --- 5:35 p.m.

" It is the President. It's kind of a big deal. "

Melissa Graves, a 20-year-old UW student, lives on the 700 block of University Avenue in the Lucky. Thursday her building, along with 11 others on campus, will have limited access.

" I understand the need for security. You don't want to have anybody looking out over Bascom. You don't know what they're going to do. The last thing you want is a problem while the President is visiting."

Andrew Wislow lives in the same building. Starting tomorrow morning at 9 A.M. apartment windows, drapes and curtains must be closed and watching the event from a balcony or window is strictly prohibited. Six other campus buildings most of them on Bascom Hill will be closed completely.

Sophomore Rachel Levy says two of her classes have already been canceled because of tomorrow's visit and she's waiting to hear about a third. One of them is nowhere near Bascom Hill where the President will hold his rally.

Levy says, " It's canceled because I guess they support the fact that Obama is here and they want to be able to give students the opportunity to go see the President. "

Vince Sweeney with the UW says their team has been in constant contact with the Secret Service and he believes they have a good plan in place. He also believes this a great opportunity to showcase the UW.

" We think that for the students, regardless of your political affiliation, that's kind of a cool thing to have the President of the United States come to your school."

Sweeney says the plan they have in place is hopefully the plan they'll be moving forward with. But he says this is a fluid situation so building access and closures could change.
