VIDEO REPORT: Protesters Greet Walmart Shoppers

Posted Friday November 23, 2012 --- 3:15 p.m.

Protesters armed with bullhorns and signs lined the streets outside the Super Walmart in Monona as shoppers, like the Korpela brothers, made their way into the store.

" I don't have to work on Black Friday so I don't know why a lot of other people have to. "

Wesley Korpela and his two brothers were out a 6:30AM to take advantage of some of the door busters. The protesters didn't stop them from going into Walmart. But they agree with some of what they're saying.

Wesley says, " I don't think it's a holiday that you should have to work."

Having employees work on Thanksgiving or Black Friday isn't one of the main issues for the protesters. The biggest issues for the protesters are wages and benefits. They claim workers don't get enough of either.

Karen Wood says, " It is just unjust and morally and ethically wrong that all of these people have to be surviving the way that they are. "

Frank Wood, Karen's husband says, " By paying them substandard wages and benefits its causing great stress on our social fabric. "

After the rally protesters made their way to the store's front door to hand deliver a letter outlining their complaints. They were met by a store employee and told he'd pass their letter along to corporate.

The protesters did eventually make their way off the store's property. Many vowing to never spend another dime in a Walmart store.

The well publicized protests didn't stop many from shopping at Walmart. At one point last night workers were scanning close to 5,000 items per second.

Notice how the response by the many in community is "They should get a different job if they don't want to work on Thanksgiving"? Notice how the workers and protesters actually mention, nationwide, that that is one of the lesser qualms with Walmart's employer practices? Many hubs within the media (NBC 15 excluded) are misstating this as an issue of these protesters. Mainly to distract from the real issue which has become quite controversial. That issue is trade policy. Unfettered free trade is the reason for both a soft labor market and a soft manufacturing environment. Employers can payless & offer less. Less than 1.5% of US flags that are sold within the US are manufactured outside the US. This is due to PROTECTIONIST policies. But the American people do this to themselves. By patronizing massive importers. By electing free trade representation. By quarreling over superficial nonsense while the economic standing of our nation continues to decline. Wake up people.

Next year I hope to see them protest outside of police and fire stations, hospitals, military bases, gas stations, grocery stores that are open until early afternoon, and the other big box stores that opened on Thanksgiving. Walmart employees are not the only people to work holidays, they should be thankful that they will at least get Christmas off.

Walmart is one of the largest employers in the US. Some communities in this country would fade away if not for Walmart employment.Unions have broke about every industry in this land , one of the latest was Hostess bakeries. If folks don't like what they earn, they can quit,no problem.

The lazification of America continues. " I don't think it's a holiday that you should have to work." That's life, if you don't want to work on a holiday get a skill to qualify for a job that doesn't require working on a holiday.
