UPDATE: RGA ad attacking Burke begins airing early

UPDATED Monday, February 17, 2014 --- 2:40 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The first attack ad in the Wisconsin governor's race has hit airwaves three days earlier than originally planned.

The Republican Governors Association is paying for the statewide ad against Democrat Mary Burke.

RGA spokesman Jon Thompson says the ad was ready earlier than thought, so it began running Sunday instead of Wednesday as originally planned.

The ad attacks Burke's role in Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle's administration as Department of Commerce secretary from 2005 to 2007, spotlighting an audit that was critical of the agency.

The ad also targets outsourcing of jobs overseas by Trek Bicycle Corp., without referring by name to the company where Burke served as an executive.

Burke spokesman Joe Zepecki says the ad is meant to distract from Gov. Scott Walker's job creation record.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Republican Governors Association plans to launch a six-figure ad buy next week attacking Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke on the same day that thousands of emails from a convicted felon who worked for Gov. Scott Walker are released.

The ad is the first television salvo in the re-election race for Walker, a national conservative star who is also eyeing a 2016 presidential run.

RGA spokesman Jon Thompson said Thursday the ad will air statewide on cable and broadcast networks starting Wednesday and focus on Burke's time in Gov. Jim Doyle's administration.

Burke worked as Doyle's Department of Commerce secretary and is a former Trek Bicycle Corp. executive.

Also Wednesday emails from former Walker aide Kelly Rindfleisch are being released. She was convicted of doing campaign work on government time.
