A sick bat was found on the sidewalk near the McFarland House Cafe, located at 5923 Exchange Street in McFarland. The bat did test positive for rabies.
Public Health is looking for anyone who may have had contact with the bat prior to it being picked up by Animal Services Wednesday night.
Rabies is spread when saliva from an infected animal enters another animal via a bite or a break in the skin. Just walking past a sick bat will not give you rabies, but picking it up or handling it could. If left untreated, rabies is almost 100% fatal.
If you have touched the bat or know of someone who has, please call Public Health - Madison and Dane County, 608-267-1989.
