Report Shows Why Republicans May Oppose Walker on Budget

Posted Wednesday, March 20, 2013 --- 12:20 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new report by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance may explain why some Republican lawmakers have been outspoken in opposing Gov. Scott Walker's budget that would freeze spending increases for public schools.

The report released Wednesday found that of the state's 424 public school districts, 49 had lower revenues this year than a decade ago. Of those, about two-thirds are in Republican Senate districts.

Schools had been allowed to raise spending every year until Walker cut the increases in his last budget for the first time in state history. He wants to freeze it for the next two years.

The report says a majority of Republican senators represent areas with school districts that have seen little growth or declines in their revenue limits over the past decade.
