UPDATE: Vos Promises Aggressive Agenda, New Tone

UPDATED Tuesday, November 13, 2012 --- 2:20 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Newly selected state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos tells his Republican colleagues that he will work together with Democrats to set a new tone in Wisconsin.

Vos was unopposed for speaker Tuesday. He will take over when the Legislature reconvenes in January with Republicans in control of the Assembly just as they were the prior two years.

But Vos says no party has a monopoly on good ideas and he wants to be inclusive in how he leads.

Vos also promises to carry out an aggressive agenda, focused on reforming the state's income tax code, balancing the state budget, cutting regulations and improving education.

Rep. Scott Suder was also selected by GOP lawmakers as Republican majority leader for the next two years.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Rep. Robin Vos of Burlington has been elected speaker of the state Legislature.

He ran unopposed Tuesday and was elected to the post by his Republican colleagues.

The 44-year-old Vos was first elected to the Assembly in 2004. He served the past two years as co-chairman of the powerful budget-writing Joint Finance Committee. Vos takes over as speaker for Jeff Fitzgerald, who ran for the U.S. Senate rather than to seek re-election.

As speaker, Vos will help determine which bills the Assembly takes up and guide its public message. Republicans are expected to hold a 60-39 advantage in the Assembly once election results from last week are finalized.

Assembly Democrats and Senate Democrats were also meeting Tuesday to elect their leaders for the session that begins in January.
