Semi Driver Dies after Crash in Grant County

Title of Release: Commercial Motor Vehicle Fatal Crash (2st fatal crash in 2013)

Location: USH 18 at County Highway K

Date and Time: April 3, 2013 at 10:41 a.m.

Subject Involved: Driver: Michael R. Schoenbeck, 38 y/o of Grant Park, IL. – DECEASED

Vehicle Information: Semi is owned by Ray Dettmering Farms of Peotone, IL and was hauling wheels for railroad cars.

Information:

On 4/3/13 at 10:41 am the Grant County dispatch center was notified of a semi crash with an injured person on Hwy 18 in the Township of Mount Ida. The driver was assisted by passer by’s until Deputies arrived on scene at 10:49 am and it was found the driver of the semi, Michael Schoenbeck, 38, of Grant Park, IL was deceased.

Schoenbeck had been traveling east on Hwy 18 when he failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway striking a mailbox and tree belonging to Theresa and Jamie Braudt. The rail wheels came loose and further crushed the cab of the semi and came to rest in the Braudt’s yard.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Fennimore Fire and EMS, The Grant County Highway Department, A-1 Crane service, The Wisconsin State Patrol and Guy’s Truck and Tractor.

Hwy 18 near Mount Ida had one lane closed for nearly 6 hours due to crash investigation and clean up of the scene.

Schoenbeck was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. This crash remains under investigation.
