Around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report that a semi trailer carrying cattle rolled over in the median of USH 18/151 near County Highway E in the Town of Blue Mounds.
Deputies say the driver believed the load he was hauling shifted, causing the semi to tip.
The driver sustained minor injuries, and several of the 32 cattle died in the crash. Three cattle had to be put down afterward.
Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of USH 18/151 were closed to traffic while crews rounded up the cattle.
Officers from the Villages of Blue Mounds and Mount Horeb assisted with both traffic control and securing the cattle.
Area farmers also volunteered to assist with locating and capturing the loose cattle. The sheriff's department says, "Their expertise and equipment were essential in rounding up the cattle and making the area safe for passing motorists."
The driver was heading from Iowa to Milwaukee.
