UPDATE: Shawano teen to compete at National Spelling Bee

UPDATED Sunday, May 25, 2014 --- 2:12 p.m.

SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) -- A 13-year-old from Shawano will be representing Wisconsin at this week's National Spelling Bee.

Gannett Wisconsin Media reports Karelyn Malliet won the state bee in March to clinch the berth in the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition in Maryland.

The Shawano Community Middle School student has been studying daily since at least last summer, using spelling websites, preparation material from bee officials, and even her mother, who quizzes her on words.

She says she not only studies words but patterns within words, which can help her figure out the spelling of a word she may not know.

Some 281 spellers are scheduled to compete, including more than a dozen who have made it to the competition before.

The spelling bee starts Tuesday with a preliminary vocabulary test.

SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) -- A Shawano seventh-grader has landed a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee next month.

Karelyn Malliet recently won state competition by correctly spelling the word fulgent, which means to shine brightly. Malliet says her win and chance on the national stage still seems surreal.

But, for language teacher Anne Beck, it's not all that surprising. Beck tells WLUK-TV Malliet is self-motivated and self-directed. Malliet will compete against 280 other top spellers for $30,000 and the national trophy.

Malliet says she will review thousands of words by the time the bee rolls around May 27. She says she will rely on her skills and a pre-bee ritual. Malliet says whenever she eats candy before a spelling contest, she wins.
