More and more people are shopping at locally owned, small businesses this black Friday. For many, locally owned businesses offer an alternative to the big box store experience.

“It's a little less crowded, little easier to find a parking place and just a lot of personal attention,”said Lynette Mayhew, who was shopping at a locally owned business today.

More shoppers are expected to shop locally tomorrow, as a way to support small business Saturday. Small business Saturday is celebrated nationally and encourages shoppers to shop locally owned, small businesses in their communities every year.

Local stores that can't offer the same savings as big box retailers hope other events can draw new customers.

In Madison, the 5th annual Holiday Open House will include events inside and around 37 local shops downtown. Trolley rides, refreshments and raffles are a substitute for massive sales on what is known as Small Business Saturday.

"Most of our products wouldn't be advertised on television," said Peg Scholtes, co-owner of Capitol Kids. "We don't get the special deals with the toy manufacturers." Instead, Scoltes will offer games and other activities Saturday.

The owners of Anthology, a craft store on State Street, plan to offer their popular button-making among other projects.

"Just the scale of buying that they do allows them to offer huge price discounts and we just can't really compete on price," said Laura Komai. "I'm not saying our prices are exorbitant but that's not something we even try to say 'Oh what's Michael's doing and how do we beat them?'"

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit the link below for a complete list of events.
