Snowmobile vs. Car Crash in Dane Co.

Posted Wednesday, January 2, 2013 --- 11:00 a.m.

Press Release from the Dane Co. Sheriff's Office:

Madison, WI. January 2, 2013 – Shortly after 3:00 pm on Tuesday, January 1st, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a snowmobile vs. car crash on Lavina Road in the town of Dane.

A snowmobile operated by Brett A. Roesslein, age 52, unexpectedly entered the roadway. An approaching vehicle operated by Nick J. Ballweg, age 29, was unable to stop due to the snow covered and slippery road. The snowmobile and car collided, resulting in Roesslein being injured. His injuries were not life threatening and he was transported to Meriter Hospital for treatment.

The incident was forwarded to Marine and Trail Enforcement deputies and the DNR for follow-up.

Many snowmobilers are currently out enjoying the abundance of snow on our beautiful Dane County trail system. If you were born on or after January 1st , 1985, and are at least 12 years of age, you must complete a snowmobile safety certification course to operate a snowmobile on public trails. And just like vehicles, alcohol and speed are primary factors in crashes. Drive sober and drive at moderate speeds. During hours of darkness, the law states that snowmobiles may not exceed 55 mph. Other suggestions for an enjoyable and safe ride are carrying a first aid kit including a flashlight and compass, dress appropriately for the weather, stay on marked trails, and avoid traveling across bodies of water.

The Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to have a safe and fun-filled winter on our trails. Marine and Trail deputies will be out whenever possible to enforce the laws and maintain a safe environment.
