WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) -- An Army paratrooper who was born in central Wisconsin has died while serving in Afghanistan.
Sgt. First Class Matthew Leggett served with the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Relatives in Wisconsin tell Daily Tribune Media (http://wrtnews.co/1oYbaUC ) that the 39-year-old Leggett was born in Wisconsin Rapids and still has extended family in the area.
Cousin Jerry Leggett says Matthew's father grew up in Nekoosa and also had a career in the military. He now lives in Texas.
The Department of Defense says Leggett died Wednesday, but didn't say how. Leggett enlisted in the Army in1995 and has served three combat tours. He was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat.
