VIDEO REPORT: Star Spangled No More

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 24, 2012--6:15p.m.
RICHLAND CENTER-- It's a popular summer bash--and has been for the last nineteen years. "Some smaller acts that just start off all the way to some large acts who are up and coming on the billboard charts," described Jennifer Perkins. She's talking about the Star Spangled Celebration in Richland Center, of which she is the executive director. "They wait all year and use this as their vacation, their mini vacation is to come to Star Spangled," she said of some of the fans.

Mildred Stanisic owns the Park View Motel which sits just across the street from the park where the event is usually held. "It's our biggest money making event that we have for the whole year," she said."It's totally full all three days."

Perkins says around ten thousand people flood the park for the event some years, but in recent years ticket sales have dropped. "Unfortunately we just do not have the funds to continue."
That's why the Star Spangled Celebration won't be happening any more. She says it easily costs around $800,000 to put the three-day music fest on each year. "It hurts us all knowing that we can't make it work," said Perkins.

Stanisic says she's hoping to sell her motel ASAP to move closer to family. "It's really a great little business," she said of the motel.
But she says the loss of the annual event will likely hurt local businesses. "I'm sure it's going to have a big impact, you know because everybody waits for that day, everybody makes money on those three days."

Why focus on the motel? Why not focus the story on the fact that this has been a non-profit, charitable, organization from the start? This festival started out small and has donated over $550,000 back into the community, not just a few scholarships and organizations. Sure the businesses are going to hurt, but how many non-profit, community based, concerts are there? Missed the mark with this one.

You want to know what's garbage. That woman you interviewed from the motel, she isn't a sponsor/donor and hasn't been from the beginning. Who cares about her business! She reaped the benefits and never gave back once to our local fundraiser. I've been a NBC viewer for many years, but this airing was beurocratic garbage. Tragedy yes, but let her finish her interview with the thank you's, and drop the pity story garbage from across the street!

So... People book the hotel and sit outside and watch/listen to the concert, without having to buy a ticket? I wonder why the event isn't making money.

Even though I haven't been to Star Spangled Celebration since I moved to Madison ( about 13yrs) I'm saddened to hear that it will not be around anymore. I volunteered for years at the event including the very first year it started. My mother lived right behind the motel and every year even though we all lived close by we would camp out at her house. It was a great place to go and basically tailgate. It's too bad some of the artists demanded so much, after all , we are the ones that purchased their music to help make them famous.
