MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state of Wisconsin is warning people about a phone scam apparently targeting Hispanic customers.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says the callers claim to work for the local electric company and say they are attempting to collect payment for past due statements. They instruct victims to wire money or put money on a prepaid debit card to avoid having their power shut off.
The state says it has seen an increase in complaints from Spanish-speaking consumers who have been contacted about the scams in recent days.
Anyone who receives a call is encouraged to hang up at once and contact their local utility company to confirm their account balance, and report the scam with police as well as their utility provider.
