Stay inside your vehicle at the time of an accident

POSTED December 13, 2013-- 5:40 p.m.

Wisconsin state patrol responded to crash after crash all day Sunday.

"Sunday was typical of first two or three snowfalls each year," said Wisconsin State Patrol trooper, Todd Weinberger.

The most significant on Highway 41 near Milwaukee, there was a massive pile up killing one person and causing a lot of injuries.

"Sunday there were a number of people who got out of their vehicle. The first thing in instruct them to do is get back inside and put their seat belt on," said Weinberger.

What you drive actually serves as protection. Getting out can create a greater risk of injury.

"You're exposing yourself to moving traffic, slippery road conditions that caused them to go into he ditch in the first place," said Weinberger.

Wednesday in Menasha, also on Highway 41, a car smashed into a pulled over Winnebago County squad car and another vehicle.

"The likelihood of them or additional vehicles losing control and striking their vehicle remains until they can get that scene stabilized," said Weinberger.

While the recent massive pile up is uncommon, crashes and slide offs during a snow storm are not.

"I would say it's typical unfortunately," said Weinberger.

The main reason is speed.

"If people could remember to just leave a little bit early and truly slow down and increase your following distance to allow your self time to break for the vehicle in front of you that may have lost control," said Weinberger.

If you have to get out of your car to check to make sure the tailpipe is clear, wait until it seems safe and leave your window cracked to avoid carbon monoxide build up. Also, if you can, make sure you know your exact location. That gets help to you faster.
