As Christmas songs play in the background, signs of holiday cheer fill Hilldale Mall.
"Christmas shopping and paying taxes, it's always very festive the day before," joked Stephen Wortman.
Like the hundreds of folks at Hilldale, Wortman procrastinated on his shopping this year.
"I like it. I like the press," he said. "Plus, you get the bargains if you come last minute."
The New Yorker is in Madison visiting family, and supporting his family's legacy with his wallet Monday evening at Macy's.
"My grandpa was the president of Macy's in 1935 through somewhere in the early 60s," Wortman said. "I have to shop there."
Julie Fleming and her husband waited until now to buy presents for relatives only because they had some big milestones this fall.
"I'm typically done with my shopping on Halloween, but this year with the pregnancy--my first pregnancy--and I switched jobs, I'm a first year teacher," the Lake Mills woman said. "So I have not had time to shop."
Fleming says the crowds weren't too bad Monday. Doug Bremicker of Madison says, that depends where you go.
"At West Towne it was backed up for a half mile just trying to get into the mall," Bremicker said. "So Hilldale is a lot better choice for me to get things done."
