Stoughton Woman Describes Close Call At Boston Marathon

It was Bev Fergus' fifteenth marathon; third Boston Marathon.

"It was a perfect day for a race" says Fergus.

But what started as perfect ended as anything but.

"I was running with a friend, another woman from Madison, up until mile 21. I was almost sprinting at that point. There's probably, tens of thousands of people just screaming for you” Fergus tells NBC 15.

But screams of excitement quickly turned into terror.

"I was racing to the finish line and it felt like it was 100 yards to the end when the first blast happened” says Fergus.

Fergus says what happened next was like something straight out of a movie.

"Everybody slowed down a little bit like going, "that's strange". And then 15-30 seconds later, right next to us, the second explosion went off. Everything just stopped. Everybody stopped in their tracks” Fergus says.

Fergus knew it was bad, but could have never guessed just how bad.

"There was a woman right next to me and she was just shaking like a leaf. People were shoving their phones at me saying, "call your family. Call your family. Let them know you're okay."

Fergus says she's thankful she wasn't hurt, but even more thankful her family's ok. This was her only race her children didn't attend. And if they had been there in Boston, cheering their mom on at the finish line, things may have been much different for them today.

"It's terrifying to think of what could have been” Fergus says.

Fergus tells NBC 15 she's not sure if she'll ever run the Boston Marathon again, but she's not giving up on running altogether, saying you can't let scary things stop you from doing what you love.
