Madison Police say a 40-year-old Stoughton woman stepped in to stop the mugging and beating of a Madison man.

The woman told police she was driving on Dane St near Park St. Thursday afternoon when she saw two muggers on top of a man. She says they were punching him in the head.

"Everyone was driving past like they didn't see nothing," the woman is quoted in the police report.

The woman stopped her car, got out, ran across the street and yelled at the criminals to stop.

They ran away with the 20-year-old victim's cell phone.

The victim says he knew one of the attackers. Both are still on the loose.
