Details:
A 15-year-old Memorial High School student was arrested Monday morning after she punched a 56-year-old teacher in the face.

The educator told police the student was being verbally abusive and disruptive, and after being told several times to quiet down and be respectful a private security guard was called to escort the student out of the classroom.

Before leaving the student delivered a blow to the teacher's head.

The suspect claims she got violent because the teacher called her a name.

She also said the teacher can't tell her what to do, and that she would hit the teacher again.

The student was taken to the Juvenile Reception Center.

She said she is concerned about the student's escalating, profane, and threatening behavior.

I do not know the teacher in this case, but your comments remind me of a teacher I had in HS. None of the kids respecetd her, and she was constantly yelled at and disrespected. It never went as far as physical that I was aware of. Really, it boiled down to kids being bullies and in this case it was a teacher. Why is it these "tough" kids think it's cool to pick on someone (student or teacher) and everyone gangs up on the same person? This really can have long lasting effects on the victim.

Unions dont do anything but collect money. teachers desrve the respect of students & parents so they can do there job in a safe work condations and teach the kids how to be better people

I have read most of these comments ,some of you have valid points! the rest of you REALLY need to get a reality check! To say someone deserves to be punched? Does that mean that when some "Kid" from Memorial comes to the Mall and says you can't do that! when they get caught acting up [and believe me they do!]with the following phrase" you need to Respect me" you can't do that! I can walk up and punch them in the face !!! Gladly!!

I've known kids like this before. The reason they believe that no one can tell them what to do is because a parent told them this.

I hope you're being sarcastic, Charles. If not, and you weren't there, you have no idea. If you were there, then maybe you're another one of those kids who thinks that teachers (and other authorities) "can't make me do anything", and the whole world owes YOU, like this girl in the story seems to be. I'm patient, and have worked as a teacher for years, but I agree with Meg here, for the most part. Watch this somehow be the teacher's fault, and the district gets sued because this girl punched the teacher in the face AFTER she was being escorted from the room for swearing and being belligerent, then refusing to calm down or leave.

I am sure your kids deserved it. People like you are part of the problem. Not accepting the responsibility of their childrens actions.

RonMexico,,,, Just because some kids are raised by a single mother doesnt mean the kids are gonna act this way. I was raised most of my life by a single mother. And thru the teen years of both my kids I was a single mom. We all turned out to be productive responsible adults. Many kids from sucessful marriages are WAY worse than kids from single parents. They are usually the ones that get every little thing they want and when older and have to work for what they want they turn to stealing, violent behavior. Yes not all kids from single or married families turn to violance. But dont blame the single parent households. For either household kids need to be taught from an early age to respect their elders and have responsibilities.

Anonymous: Seriously??? I didn't say kids would act a certain way IF raised by a single mom . . .I said kids who DO act out are statistically more often than not raised by a single mom. Learn how to read and interpret what you read. That means . . . get a clue.

The statistics do show that a one parent household CAN create problems in a child. That one parent is most likely having to work so many hours, and can only do so much. The other issue that takes even more importance is the lack of the OTHER parent in some cases. Kids need 2 parents--whether they are together or not. My husband's parents are divorced, and it was the mom who was the neglecting parent. It still effects him today. He wasn't anything like this girl, but he was a trouble maker growing up. I do know a lot of bratty kids that live with 2 parents, and they are very disrespectful to adults. But, most of the parents are far from being respectful to others(monkey see, monkey do).

"Kids need two parents" Sorry. Going to have to disagree with you. I was raised by a single parent, not by her choice, but because my father died in a plane crash. I am not a thug, nor a criminal. The worst thing I have ever done was get pulled over for speeding. I am a college graduate as is my brother. We both hold jobs, are married with normal adult relationships, and do not act in a disrespectful manner because we were raised by a single parent. Your comment is off base and slightly irritating. But hey, thanks for your blanket comment.

I am a senior at this school and I find this behavior absolutely horrific. Though I do not understand the legitimate reasons for this assault, events like this have occurred in the past with this teacher. According to a few teachers, she apparently had a desk thrown at her. I am in no way condoning this behavior, I am saying that there must be a central reason why so many kids try to harm her. I hope she feels better and heals, but also that she figures out the problem that causes kids to assault her. As for the student that assaulted her, I believe that a expulsion is a must. No teacher, who goes underpaid to educate kids, should go through this treatment.

Wow, I applaud your mature response! Instead of pointing fingers and assulting others, you made very sincere comments about the teacher. You will go very far in life and wish you the best of luck. We need more adults like you in our community.
