JANESVILLE--NBC15 stopped by Janesville Wednesday evening, right near where Rep. Paul Ryan lives with his family. Even though we've got less than a week until election day--and it's really crunch time for the campaigns--that's not stopping the Republican vice presidential nominee from getting out and having a little Halloween fun with his kids.
Despite spending the day on the campaign trail, tonight politics are off limits. "Ahh we're not doing questions," he said when a reporter tried to ask him about a recent poll.
"This is the route I did when I was a kid," he said, while pointing out the path. "I did this route every day, every Halloween when I was a kid and so the kids do the same one. Okay let's do the Cullen's next you guys!"
This neighborhood politician's rise to national prominence is now inspiring the littlest trick-or-treaters."I'm Paul Ryan," said two-year-old Gavin Murphy. He was sporting the suit, tie, and campaign button. "Daddy thought of the costume," said Cristina Murphy, Gavin's mom. Paul Ryan's been so popular lately and he lives down the street, so we thought we would dress him up as Paul Ryan."
At one point, Gavin even had the hair: "We had his hair colored black, but it actually wore out a little bit already," said Cristina.
Locals are also keeping an eye out for their famous neighbor.
"I saw him turn the corner up there and I'm hoping they come down this way so I can wish him luck," said Jim Schultz, who also lives near the Ryans.
Ryan's stardom also might be drawing more attention to this part of town tonight. "I think there's a lot more emphasis on the neighborhood with him being the vp candidate," said Schultz. "And I think it's brought more people out tonight too."
