A tragedy in Colorado, where the remains of a missing 10-year-old girl were found, brings the issue of child safety to the forefront. Just what parents now need to take from this tragedy to protect their young ones.

The disappearance of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway is a cast that's now even more heart wrenching after police discovered her body today. A case that's every parent's worst nightmare.

For moms picking up their children at Midvale Elementary School, it's an incident that hits home.

Julie says, "It's certainly a scary situation, especially having a first grader who is confident and likes to talk to people."

The National Center of Missing and Exploited Children says numbers show that 43% of the attempted-abduction incidents involved children between the ages of 10 and 14 years old.

The center found that keeping children out of harms way would require educating them about safety and not through what experts are now calling an "outdated and misleading message", known as the stranger danger talk.

According to N.C.M.E.C., the majority of cases show most children are not taken by a stranger, but rather are abducted by someone they know. The center adds that most children perceive strangers as "ugly or mean" people rather than attractive. They often think that strangers are someone they see just once.

Instead the center encourages parents to teach their kids how to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

There are five common tricks used by abductors, that your children should be aware of:
1. the person will often offer a child a ride
2. offer candy or sweets, or even money
3. show the child an animal
4. ask for help finding an animal
5. they might ask the child for directions.
