A local man with a penchant for shoes is quite the local celebrity! He has almost 100 pairs. But not just any kind of kicks: Chuck Taylors! It's a an extensive collection that keeps him on his toes.
Chuck Stangl likes to have fun at work. He also likes to have fun on his feet.
“We're all known for something and I'm known for my Converse,” said Stangl.
The physical education teacher from Beaver Dam has a hobby. He only wears the iconic shoe from Converse: Chuck Taylors.
“So it's really kind of fun because every morning it's a different pair,”
Chuck got his first pair back in 1996.
“I just started wearing Converse and it just continues and we kept buying and kept adding to the collection and it grew and grew and grew,” he said.
Upstairs in his closet, he has 89 pairs
“I'm probably the only guy that says I have more shoes than my wife does,” said Chuck. “I have a very understanding wife!”
And every size 12 pair is a different color or theme.
“These are called Vegas chucks and they have playing cards on them,”
“This pair is my outside working shoes,” he said showing off a raggedy pair of Chucks.
“On one half there's Ca in the Hat on the other half there's Thing 1 and Thing 2 and they even had them embroidered for me,” he said describing his Dr. Suess Chucks.
It doesn't matter what the occasion is, you'll find Chuck wearing Chucks.
“My youngest daughter Caitlin got married a year ago in May and she designed a pair for me on the Converse website to match the bridesmaid dresses,”
In Beaver Dam, Chuck's feet are famous.
“I'm known around Beaver Dam as the guy with the shoes and I can't go anywhere without wearing my Converse,”
And at school, his elementary students think Chuck's Chucks are the coolest.
“The kids love it at school,” he said. “If I showed up in something different, people would wonder what's wrong,”
Chuck wears running shoes when he goes walking with his wife. He estimates he gets a new pair of Chucks every six months. Right now, he's on the prowl for a hot pink pair.
And no, even though his name is Chuck he doesn't feel a connection to the shoe Chuck Taylor because of that. That's just a coincidence
