To Cancel Class or Not?

Wednesday, January 30, 2013--5:10p.m.
For students in some of the area's school districts, today's snowstorm translated into a day off. For others, it was just another day at school. We wanted to know what goes into the decision to hold--or cancel--class.

The spokeswoman for the Madison Metropolitan School District said they check-in with the streets dept., Madison Metro, the police, forecasters and the private bus companies they work with before making a decision. She said their first priority is student safety.

She also said you can't really compare the decision MMSD makes to other area districts, because the communities are different.

I was reared in NW Wisconsin and while I can't say school was never canceled it was very rare. Now school cancellations are common for any number of reasons. People today are unwilling to deal with any degree of adversity and I don't think this leads us to a better place for our children.
