UPDATE: No Charges Expected in Fatal Wis. Pit Bull Attack

UPDATED Monday, March 17, 2013 --- 4:08 p.m.

TOWN OF WALWORTH, Wis. (AP) -- The Walworth County sheriff's office says no charges are expected in a pit bull attack that killed a young boy earlier this month.

Sheriff's Capt. Dana Nigbor tells The Janesville Gazette she does not anticipate any criminal charges being filed in the mauling.

The district attorney's office will make a final charging decision. District Attorney Daniel Necci said Friday it was too soon to tell if his office would file charges.

Fourteen-month-old Daxton Borchardt was at his baby sitter's home in the Town of Walworth March 6 when the two were attacked by the woman's pit bulls. The boy was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Funeral services for Dax, as the boy was called, were held last Tuesday in Williams Bay.

The two pit bulls were euthanized.

From our news partner, WITI in Milwaukee:

WALWORTH COUNTY (WITI) — A little boy was killed on Wednesday, March 6th when he was attacked by two pit bulls, and detectives have been handed the case to see whether there was any wrongdoing.

The Walworth County Coroner says an autopsy was performed Thursday, March 7th on the body of one-year-old Daxton Borchardt, who was killed Wednesday in a pit bull attack. It could be weeks before an official report is released.

Walworth County deputies say the boy was being watched by a babysitter in a Walworth apartment on Wednesday, when two of the woman’s pit bulls suddenly attacked.

Both the babysitter, 30-year-old Susan Iwicki and the toddler suffered injuries. They were rushed to the hospital, and Borchardt was later flown by Flight for Life to Children’s Hospital, where he later died.

The two pit bulls were euthanized by a veterinarian.

At the Red Room bar in nearby Elkhorn, the little boy was remembered on Thursday. His father is a DJ at the bar, where messages of support were written on the wall.

“Our prayers are with them and if they need anything, you know, we’ll be here,” the bar’s owner said.

Donations can be made at any Associated Bank to the Daxton Borchardt Fund.

From our news partner, WITI in Milwaukee:

WALWORTH COUNTY (WITI) — Walworth County Sheriff’s deputies say a 14-month-old boy was attacked by two pit bulls in the Town of Walworth on Wednesday, March 6th. The boy later died.

The boy was flown by Flight for Life to Milwaukee with critical injuries — but later succumbed to those injuries.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office says the incident occurred on North Lakeshore Drive.

30-year-old Susan Iwicki called 911 just before 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, stating that she and the young boy were under attack from two pit bulls she owns on the property. The animals were removed from the property, and a vet euthanized both pit bulls.

A neighbor told FOX6 News Iwicki was babysitting the child.

“It’s a quiet area. A lot of the people don’t live here year round, and it’s a quiet road. I’m not gonna sleep well tonight,” Sandi McGough said.

The area was quiet without many of its summertime residents, but those who live in the area year round said they were stunned and heartbroken to learn of the pit bull attack.

A neighbor told FOX6 News Iwicki had had the pit bulls since they were puppies, and said the dogs seemed well-behaved.

So terrible about the baby. When will people learn about this breed. I have been told so many times its because of the owner. All dogs were bred for specific purposes. I am sick of hearing how wonderful this breed is. How come 85% of all dogs in a shelter are pits? Why did the mother of this baby leave her child with a sitter with 2 pits? How many beagles have killed or mauled a person?

Would people be upset if the babysitter had a python that killed the baby? Would people be upset if the babysitter had a hyena that killed the baby? How about a small crocodile? Guess what? Pit bulls have jaws and muscles designed to puncture with immense pressure in to flesh, then shake their head to rip gashes in to flesh like a scissors so the prey, or baby, bleeds to death quickly. It is NOT a pet. A tiger is not a pet, but a tabby cat is. A small garden snake is a pet, a python is not. A poodle is a pet, a pit bull is not. See the difference?

A misunderstood breed? People, if you desire such a breed, keep them locked up and AWAY from children! You are asking for trouble having a dog like that.

Instead of banning Pit Bulls we should just ban everyone from having children, then these dogs wouldnt have anything to attack and all the bad press would just go away.

This is beyond tragic. You can say it the owners fault, blah blah blah, but I seriously doubt if anyone has ever been killed by a Brittany Spaniel or Welsh Corgi. Please make this breed illegal.

Steve, it doesn'nt matter how you bring this worthless piece of dog up, even from a pup, this breed of dog needs to be destroyed, PERIOD! You people keep saying that this breed of dog is gentle and loveable, until the worthless dog kills some one or mauls people. You don't hear of any other breed of dog that kills people do you, wake up law enforcement and ban these dogs in your town and the US of A. The owner of this dog that bites any of my grandchildren might just get a cap in his or her behind. I say give these people who own these dogs, fine them,I mean big bucks, put there behinds in jail, say 10 years and let them know the law is not messing with these dog owners. Enough is Enough already!!!

This baby sitter should be brought up on charges at the very least child endangerment. I mean WHO lets pit bulls anywhere NEAR the child or in the same room. This baby sitter is negligent and I hope she pays for it and goes to jail.
  • by Mom Location: Southern WI on Mar 7, 2013 at 07:22 PM
So sad. I certainly hope the babysitter is held accountable. Those dogs should have been kept away from any child who was in her care. That boy was totally defenseless, and the parents of the child trusted the babysitter to keep him safe. I am sure the babysitter feels just awful, but that doesn't bring back that little boy.

WOW... how truly sad... I guess there is a reason the insurance industry says the PIT-BULL is a top DANGEROUS dog...
  • by Done Location: Madison on Mar 6, 2013 at 10:05 PM
I am an dog lover but the statistics on this breed clearly support wiping it out as a family pet. I know, I know...my pitbull is a great dog, he's never hurt anyone. Save it scumbags.
