Town of Madison K-9 Helps Police Find 65 Pounds of Marijuana in Locker

Posted Tuesday, December 18, 2012 --- 3:56 p.m.

Information from Town of Madison Police:

On 12/7/12 the DeForest Police were at the Stuff and Store storage facility located on Cottage Grove Road investigating a separate incident. During that investigation, the town of Madison K-9 unit was requested to conduct a sniff of a storage locker.

While conducting a sniff of said unit, K-9 Brando alerted to another storage unit nearby. Contact was made with the owner of that unit who confirmed the unit was his. A rental contract was obtained and also confirmed that the unit had one lessee. The lessee initially agreed to meet with his attorney and law enforcement at the unit, but never showed.

DCI and the Dane County Drug Task force were contacted to assist. The DeForest Police and Dane County Drug Task members executed a search warrant at 4:44 p.m. and 65.14 pounds of processed high grade marijuana with an approximate street value of $234,504 was located and seized.

Detectives also located three hand guns in the unit, one of which was a .25 caliber that had a loaded magazine seated in the well. All seized items were processed and secured by the DeForest Police Department and secured in their property room. Thanks to K-9 Brando for the alert!

On 12/11/12 Officer Pucillo and his K-9 partner Brando were requested to assist the city of Madison on a traffic stop near Woodman's east on Milwaukee Street. City of Madison had made a traffic stop and wanted K-9 Brando to sniff the vehicle for the odor of drugs.

The suspect gave consent to search the vehicle, but had "inadvertently" locked his keys in the car. A tow service was called to unlock the vehicle and an interior search of the car was conducted.

K-9 Brando ultimately began focusing in on a black plastic tool chest container on the back passenger seat. Officer Pucillo removed the chest from the vehicle, opened the chest, and located a large quantity of a large white substance believed to be suspect cocaine. It was later determined that there was 1.4 kilos of cocaine in this chest.
