Title of Release: Two Fires in Grant County Close Roads for Hours
Location: Rockville in Potosi Twsp and Georgetown in Smelser Twsp
Date and Time: Rockville Fire at 5:10 pm // Georgetown Fire at 9:30

1.On January 13th at approximately 5:10 pm emergency personnel responded to a report of a chimney fire located at 6414 Hwy 35/61 in Rockville, which is in Potosi Township. The reported chimney fire quickly spread and the house became fully engulfed. The Potosi Fire Department, Lancaster Fire Department, and Potosi EMS battled the blaze. Both lanes of Hwy 35/61 at Rockville were closed for approximately three hours as traffic was rerouted by Wisconsin State Patrol, The Grant County Sheriff’s Department, and the Lancaster Police Department. 2.On January 13th at approximately 9:30 pm emergency personnel responded to a report of a fully engulfed woodworking shop located at1323 Church Rd in Georgetown, which is in Smelser Township. Along with the woodworking materials, the building contained large amounts of chemicals used in the manufacturing of wood products. Many residences (6 households in total) in the immediate area were evacuated due to the chemical dangers. There were 55 gallon drums exploding and possible dangers from the burning chemical fumes. Assisting the Cuba City Fire Department at the scene were Fire Departments from Hazel Green, Dickeyville, Jamestown, Platteville, and Lancaster, as well as, Cuba City EMS, Rehab from Lancaster, and Lancaster Hazmat. Due to the freezing temperatures ice was forming on the roadway as fire trucks transported much needed water from Cuba City to the scene.
The Grant County Highway Department, Smelser Township, and the Cuba City Public Works were all dispatched and they provided gravel and salt on the roadways for the tenders providing water at the blaze. CTH D was closed for approximately two hours while emergency personnel extinguished the fire. Traffic control was provided by the Grant County Sheriff’s Department, The Wisconsin State Patrol and The Cuba City Police Department.
