EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) -- U.S. Silica is considering opening a frack sand mining operation that would be Eau Claire County's largest.
A company representative tells WQOW-TV the site under consideration is 650 acres in the Town of Fairchild. The operation would be larger than U.S. Silica's other Wisconsin mine, which is in Sparta.
The company says the Eau Claire operation would likely employ more than 60 people and would use a rail line near the site to transport minerals. A public meeting is scheduled Monday evening at the elementary school in Fairchild.
Currently, Eau Claire County has three frack sand operations -- Hi Crush, High Country Sand and Five Star Properties.
