UW-Madison Police are searching for eight missing koi that appear to have been stolen from the Botany Gardens.

Police responded to the gardens, which are just south of Birge Hall (430 Lincoln Drive), Friday after the fish were reported missing. Investigators believe someone fished the koi out sometime between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

Right now it is unclear how the fish thief got away without being noticed. Garden staff say some of the fish are nearly a foot and a half long and have been in the pond for more than 10 years.

Garden staff have also ruled out animals as the cause for the disappearances.

Here's a description of the fish provided by UW-Madison Police:
The missing koi are described as large fish, ranging in age from 2 to 10+ years old, with various colored scales – grey, yellow, red, blue, and orange. Some of the fish are speckled with all five colors. Just a few of their fellow fish friends remain in the garden’s pond. The eight missing koi are valued at $1,600.

If you have any information, you’re asked to call UW-Madison Police at 608-264-COPS.
