UW Board of Regents will ask Gov. Walker for more money

UPDATED Thursday, August 21, 2014

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The University of Wisconsin System's Board of Regents has approved asking Gov. Scott Walker for $95 million in additional tax dollars in the next state budget.

The regents voted unanimously to forward the request to Walker during a meeting at UW-Oshkosh on Thursday afternoon.

System President Ray Cross wants the money to cover a new multi-pronged plan to create jobs, boost graduation rates and offset the effects of a tuition freeze Republican lawmakers imposed after learning schools were accumulating massive surpluses while raising tuition annually. Walker wants to extend the freeze in the upcoming state budget.

The governor has warned state agencies not to expect any new tax dollars in the spending plan but Cross believes he can convince the governor and legislators the new money will boost the economy.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- University of Wisconsin System officials want Gov. Scott Walker to give them another $95.2 million in tax dollars in the next state budget.

System officials say they need the money to fund the new Talent Development Initiative, a plan designed to create science and technology jobs, boost graduation numbers, place more students in internships and maintain academic quality in light of a Republican-imposed tuition freeze.

The Board of Regents is expected to vote on whether to approve submitting the request to Walker during a meeting at UW-Oshkosh on Thursday.

Walker sent a letter to state agencies in July warning them to expect no additional tax dollars in the next budget. His spokeswoman didn't immediately return messages.
