Instead of issuing citations, UW police are using a different tactic to encourage students bicyclists to ride safely at night.
It's called the "Be Bright" initiative. Wednesday night, officers were stationed along a busy road on campus. Any biker that passed by and didn't have lights was stopped. Instead of receiving a ticket, they received free lights; one for the front and one for the back of their bicycle.
Officers also educated student bikers about the rules of the road.
"The last month campus has been in session we've had a few bike crashes and then a lot of bike complaints with bicyclists violating laws. And we also noticed with a lot of students, not having a lot of income, they don't have appropriate lighting at night” says UW Officer Kristin Radtke
A white headlight and red rear reflector are required by law.
