Press Release from the DWD:

Secretary Newson reminds UI claimants of their filing obligations for federal and state tax purposes

MADISON – Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Reggie Newson today reminded state residents who received Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits last year that they must report UI benefits as taxable income on their 2012 tax returns and that their 1099-G benefit statements for the year are easily accessible on the DWD website or soon to arrive by mail.

“The 1099-G forms are available right now on our website, a good example of the way our agency provides services in a quick, efficient, cost-effective manner,” Secretary Newson said. “To help make sure UI claimants meet their tax return obligations, we continue to send the forms by mail.”

UI benefits are considered taxable income for both federal and state income taxes, and the 1099-G form shows what a claimant received during the previous year. DWD mails 1099-G forms to the last known address of claimants, who must have the statements to complete their federal and state tax returns. DWD began mailing the 2012 1099-G forms this week.

DWD has made the forms available electronically on the UI Division website for over a decade. In September of 2012, a new online benefit system was implemented to provide enhanced security and permit a single sign-on. To access 1099-G statements, claimants can go to http://unemployment.wisconsin.gov and then follow a few easy steps to get an electronic copy of their 2012 benefit payments.

“We make the information available online before all the forms are mailed,” Secretary Newson said. “So if you changed your address since your last claim, you can get your statement online now without delay. Statements are available online for the past six years if claimants have to file amended tax returns.”

The UI Division is required to send the 1099-G information to the Internal Revenue Service and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.
