The Badgers' success on the court could also help bring the UW success in the classroom. University leaders say the NCAA tournament could increase the student applicant pool next fall.

"This is really important in that athletics is serving as a gateway into the institution, entry into let's look at Wisconsin, why not Wisconsin," said Vince Sweeney, the vice chancellor for university relations.

Sweeney says the Badgers basketball team's spot in the Final Four puts the school on the national map, boosting its image as a place that's competitive academically and athletically.

"I would just guess, this will have a positive impact on the number of kids who will apply to Wisconsin," he said. "Last Saturday's basketball game was the highest viewed college basketball game on cable TV ever. Almost 10 million people watched that game. That's a lot of exposure. It was a great thing for the athletic program and our basketball team, but it was also a great thing for this university."

He says this positive national attention will also strengthen relationships the school has with donors, alumni and companies that offer students job or internship opportunities.
