The WIAA State Basketball Tournament tipped off today, but for those who have been downtown today they may have noticed a lot of ramp and parking lot "full" signs. For tournament-goers there are a few options for securing a parking spot.
The UW-Madison campus and the city of Madison have discounted ramps. There is also a shuttle service from Alliant Energy Center to the front doors at Kohl Center. To see maps and rates, visit WIAA Basketball Tournament discounts and parking.
As many geared up for the games, they found parking a headache.
"It was horrible. There's nowhere anywhere to park," said one attendee.
"We do anticipate it to be a little more hectic Friday during the workday and even thursday afternoon," said Kate Dale of Madison Area Sports Commission.
With anticipation of the traffic outside Kohl Center, the shuttle service has been a favorable option.
"They just like it a lot better because they don't have to fight all the parking downtown -- especially the lines that go into the ramps on lake street. They can get off the highway, hop on the bus and get right to the event," said Chris Angell, Kobussen Bus shuttle service.
Jim Eder and his son, Cody, are now regulars to the shuttle service.
"Last year was our first year we enjoyed it," said Jim Eder.
"It was really convenience for us," said Cody Eder.
They make a four hour drive to the tournament every year.
"Two years ago we drove in and I lost my truck. I coudn't find my parking building,” said Jim Eder.
After searching three buildings for their truck, they decided to take the shuttle from then on. It’s made it easier for them, and other tournament goers to enjoy what they came for.
We really try to communicate to the fans and the local community the best we can about what parking is like and how to make it easy for them, so all they have to do is focus on the athlete they came to cheer on,” said Dale.
