Authorities are withholding the name of the person killed in the accident until the medical examiner finishes the investigation, but new details are available.
DNR Warden Heather Gottschalk says although the ice thickness varies wildly, the snowmobilers actually fell through open water on Beaver Dam Lake.
Aerators installed in portions of the lake supply oxygen to fish but also prevent the area from freezing. The riders fell into a football field-sized hole in the darkness around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
"They keep the water open, we refer to those holes as goose holes," said Gottschalk, who spent the morning measuring the scene and looking for tracks from an air boat. "That area was open and some of the snowmobilers did drive into it."
Locals tell NBC 15 that the "goose holes" are usually marked with cones, but they sometimes move year-to-year.
