UPDATE: Wis. Board Approves New Falconry Rules

UPDATED Wednesday, March 27, 2013 --- 10:16 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Natural Resources Board has adopted new falconry rules.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the states issue falconry rules jointly. But the federal agency plans to shift the responsibility to the states, which have until 2014 to revamp their rules to comply with federal standards.

Wisconsin's changes include increasing the number of raptors falconers can possess, giving falconers more time to report a raptor capture in the wild and eliminating the need for a permit to use raptors for educational purposes.

The board approved the changes on a 5-0 vote during a meeting Wednesday in Madison.

About 100 falconers operate in Wisconsin.
