Wis. State Patrol issues winter driving warnings

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin State Patrol is urging motorists involved in accidents this time of year to stay inside their vehicles whenever possible.

The patrol notes that crashes or slide-offs are common in winter months due to snow and icy conditions.

David Pabst is director of the State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety. He says when people leave their vehicles, they have little protection against others that can easily slide off the road. He says a person's vehicle provides the best protection.

The patrol recommends that people remain in their vehicles, with their safety belts fastened, until a law enforcement officer arrives.
