Wis. State of Tribes speech set for Feb. 13

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Menominee Nation's chairman is set to deliver the annual State of the Tribes speech on Feb. 13.

Craig Corn has been leading his tribe's push to persuade Republican Gov. Scott Walker to approve the band's plan to build an off-reservation casino in Kenosha. It's unclear when Walker might make a decision.

The tribes' relationship with and Republican legislators has been tense in recent months. During last year's state of the tribes speech Lac Courte Oreilles Chairman Gordon Thayer accused state officials of spreading propaganda about spearfishing, hurting the state's natural resources with legislation easing mining regulations and failing to give the tribes enough credit.

Thayer's remarks so angered Bill Kramer, then the Assembly Speaker Pro Tem and now majority leader that he walked out.
