MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Cudahy woman is accused of defrauding her neighbors out of more than $50,000.
Thirty-five-year-old Nicole Lee Leer was arraigned Thursday on two felony counts of theft by fraud over $10,000 and two misdemeanor counts for frauds under $2,500.
Police say Leer took advantage of her neighbors with lies about her husband's alleged cancer, a daughter's death and imminent home foreclosure.
According to the criminal complaint, Leer's pleas to at least four neighbors began in February and continued through July, before some of them became suspicious and went to police.
Detective Anthony Andrews tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the neighbors became suspicious when they continued seeing Leer's husband out and about apparently healthy, and the daughter who supposedly had died in the motorcycle crash.
Leer has pleaded not guilty.
