Wisconsin DOJ preparing for familial DNA testing

Posted Thursday, May 8, 2014 --- 9:50 a.m.

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Justice is preparing to start controversial familial DNA tests in hopes of generating more leads for local police.

Post-Crescent Media reported Wednesday that the agency is double-checking the software for the tests.

Analysts can turn to familial testing when DNA from a crime scene doesn't match any profiles in state and federal databases. Analysts look for partial matches with someone already in the database; a hit would enable police to identify the unknown suspect's relatives.

Only a handful of states use familial testing. Wisconsin American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Chris Ahmuty says familial testing is unwarranted and likened it to a fishing expedition. He says the Legislature should have signed off on it.
