It's an eye opener for Maja Lazarevic; something that hit a little too close to home. Right by her home, early Wednesday morning around 2:30AM on Fahrenbrook Court, a 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted.

Even more frightening, Lazarevic and her friends walked home an hour before the incident happened, down the same streets where the assault happened; so did one of Lazarevic's roommate, only her roommate was walking alone.

"It was really scary when I talked to her about it this morning and it literally could have been my roommate”says Lazarevic.

Lazarevic and her roommates just moved into the neighborhood a few days ago and consider it a safe area. While they know crime can happen anyway, they didn't expect it to happen near their front door

"Everybody always says 'don't walk home alone, don't walk home alone'” says Lazarevic.

According to police, the 21-year-old woman says she was walking down Park Street when a man she didn't know started following her. She says the man grabbed her from behind, threatened to shoot her, then sexually assaulted her.

"This type of crime is disturbing and is not something that is disturbing and is not something typical of Downtown Madison” says Lt. Kelly Donohue with the Madison Police Department.

It's a wake up call to students and local residents. If something doesn't seem right, trust your gut and call 9-1-1. Police say they'd rather respond and it turn out to be nothing than vice versa and have you get hurt.

Police need your help finding the suspect in this sexual assault.
He's described as a black man, about 6 feet tall, muscular, with short hair and facial stubble.
If you know anything please call Madison Police.

Also, there is a free service called SAFEwalk for those who live around campus or downtown or who are visiting the area. It's available every night and someone can escort you to your door.
