Since Madison is home to "The World's Largest Bratfest", the event's organizer says it only makes sense that the city is home to the world's longest bratwurst on a bun.
Bratfest organizer Tim Metcalfe tells NBC15 News this year they'll attempt to grill a 54-foot bratwurst, placed on a 54-foot bun at Bratfest, which takes place Memorial Day weekend at the Alliant Energy Center's Willow Island. Metcalfe says Johnsonville will make the brat, and Village Hearth Bakery in Sun Prairie will bake the bun--a bun so long it will hang out of the back of the semi that will deliver it. They will use a special 56-foot grill to cook the sausage.
According to Metcalfe, "I heard about a store in Northwest Wisconsin that set and broke the record last year--52'2". Being that we're 'The' World's Largest Brat Fest, we just can't let that record stand. The brat will be specially made and delivered next Wednesday, and the bun will be baked and delivered next Saturday morning, when we attempt to break the record, starting at 9 am." Metcalfe says, "official brat authenticator", Dane County Executive Joe Parisi, will verify the record, and then they will cut up and sell the sausage. "We have two brats and two buns, just in case something goes wrong with the first attempt."
Bratfest runs next Friday through Monday at Willow Island. The event has raised nearly 1.2 million dollars for local charities since 1983. The world record of brats consumed is 209,376 at Bratfest 2010.
NBC15's "Take Your Brat to Work Day" runs from 6 to 9 a.m. Friday, May 24th at the Alliant Energy Center.
