UPDATE: Wisconsin Athletes Competing In The Olympics

UPDATED Sunday, August 5, 2012 --- 7:25 p.m.

Several athletes with Wisconsin ties are taking part in the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London.

Current University of Wisconsin athlete Mohammed Ahmed represented Canada in the Olympics. He competed Saturday in Track & Field: the 10,000 meters.

Ahmed ran against former Badger Matt Tegenkamp (2005 graduate).

Ahmed placed 18th in the race (with a time of 28:13.91). Tegenkamp placed 19th (with a time of 28:18.26).

Mo Farah of Great Britain earned the Gold medal with a time of 27:30.42. Galen Rupp of Team USA earned Silver (27:30.90) and Tariku Bekele from Ethiopia received the Bronze (27:31.43).

Former Badger Kristin Hedstrom (graduated 2008) competed in rowing (lightweight women's double sculls) on Saturday.

Hedstrom and her teammate Julie Nichols did not place in the top 3. Hedstrom/Nichols had a time of 7:23.31.

Great Britain earned Gold with a time of 7:09.30.

China received Silver with a time of 7:11.93. And Greece earned a Bronze with a time of 7:12.09.

Hedstrom/Nichols placed 11th.

Former Badger Gwen Jorgensen (2009 graduate) represented the USA in the triathlon on Saturday.

Jorgensen placed 38th with a time of 2:06:34.00.

According to JSOnline.com: Jorgensen experienced a flat tire during the bike leg of the race.

Nicola Spirig from Switzerland earned the Gold medal with a time of 1:59:48.00. An athlete from Sweden took the Silver, and an athlete from Australia earned the Bronze medal.

Darlington native Staff Sgt. Michael McPhail represented the United State in shooting (Men's 50m Rifle, Prone).

However, he failed to make the final round. He placed ninth in the qualification round. The top 8 competed for the Gold.

Former Badger rowers Grant and Ross James competed in rowing: men's eight. The team placed fourth: just half-a-second behind Great Britain.

Germany grabbed the Gold medal, posting 5:48.75. Canada earned Silver, with a time of 5:49.98. Great Britain posted 5:51.18, with the United States in at 5:51.48.

The twins graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2009.

Meanwhile, a rower from Wisconsin did earn a bronze medal for Team USA.

Born in Minneapolis, Megan Kalmoe was raised in St. Croix Falls. She is a member of the U.S. Olympic rowing team (Women's Quadruple Sculls).

This morning, Kalmoe and her teammates won the Bronze medal.

Ukraine took gold (time: 6:35.93), while Germany earned the silver (time: 6:38.09). Team USA had a time of 6:40.63.

Former UW athlete Egle Staisiunaite represented her native Lithuania in the women’s 400 hurdles on Sunday. Staisiunaite graduated a year ago. She did not qualify for the Semifinals.

Former Badger Evan Jager ran in the 3000-meter steeplechase on Sunday.

Jager placed sixth in the race with a time of 8:23.87.

Kenya's Ezekiel Kemboi earned the Gold medal with a time of 8:18.56.

Wisconsin native Ben Provisor wrestled in the Olympics on Sunday. Provisor is a Stevens Point native. He went 1-1: beating Alexei Bel of Cuba in the opening round before losing to Zurabi Datunashvili of Georgia in the second round.

Heather Koehl will serve as an alternate on the U.S. Olympic women's archery team. Koehl is a 2008 Sheboygan Falls High School graduate.

Wisconsin native Beezie Madden will represent the U.S. as part of the equestrian show jumping team. Madden was born in Milwaukee. Madden was three years old when she began riding. Her parents owned show horses, which they kept at the Milwaukee Hunt Club.
