Family First: Sleep Routine

Posted Friday, August 13, 2010---11:23 a.m.

Summer is winding down and the kids will be heading back to school soon!

It can be tough getting back into certain routines after a relaxed summertime schedule.

Dean Clinic Pediatrician Dr. Kari Hegeman says now is the time to get back to some of those routines, especially sleep.

Dr. Hegeman says parents can help their kids prepare for back to school by asking them to go to bed at a time that's similar to the time they'll be going to bed when school starts.

"There can be, if it's done at the very last minute, a lot of anxiety related to going to bed and getting enough sleep. And kids tend to feed off of parents and if we are anxious about our kids getting enough sleep and being at their best, then they're going to be anxious about getting enough sleep," says Dr. Hegeman.

Dr. Hegeman says having a wind down routine like a bath or reading books before bed can help. She also suggests if you have a wake up routine like a family breakfast to get that started now too.
